Revisiting this tea after some time - I remembered not enjoying it much before - but this time I’m using my tiny 45 mL Gaiwan, and it starts off really nicely. There’s a gentle sweetness and a soft, creamy mouthfeel. Overall, the tea is on the watery side, but it’s surprisingly pleasant in this session, with a juicy feel and no bitterness in the early steeps - easy to drink, even for people new to Puerh. By the fourth steep, a light bitterness emerges, which actually enhances the body and makes it more interesting.
It’s always surprising how much a tea can change. I wonder if travel affects the taste, because sometimes when I receive a tea after shipping, it tastes off, only to improve after resting - especially with samples and smaller quantities. I also notice a seasonal difference: teas taste different in summer and winter, at least for me. It might be because of the cooler temperatures in the countryside where I store my tea. At warmer temperatures, teas often taste more open and bright.
This time, I’m also brewing at a slightly lower temperature, which helps bring out a softer taste. And of course, the porcelain Gaiwan brings out the aromatics nicely, - a sweet lemonade, without edges.
I’m positively surprised!
